The image for Tyrus's 2010 Christmas card comes from Leonardo da Vinci’s painting The Virgin and Child with St. Anne (1508, Louvre, Paris). Mary sits upon the lap of her mother (St. Anne) while trying to wrest a lamb from the grip of the infant Christ. The title, Legacy, refers to these three generations and the heritage of faith exhibited, not only within the holy family, but also in the forebears of faith within the Church. The theme of sacrifice cannot be ignored, though it seems a subtle side note within this tender composition. We are reminded that faith today is only possible through the personal sacrifices of those who have preceded us, just as our sacrifices will pave the way for future generations.
